Laurie Smith is a Denver based freelance photographer specializing in the world of food and travel photography. She was launched into the realm of editorial food documentation when she was given the opportunity to photograph a story on the cuisine of Oaxaca for a then-upstart magazine called Saveur. The images of Oaxaca appeared on the cover and interior of the premier issue of the magazine, thus launching her into her career of documenting food stories around the globe. Her reportage style of shooting set the style of food photography to come. Since then, her photographs have been published in over 35 cookbooks and national food magazines such as, Food and Wine, Sunset, 5280 and Cowboys and Indians. Her assignments have taken her from Peru to Argentina, from Greece to India, from Napa to Appalachia. Along the way she has developed a distinctive style of shooting, always using natural light and traveling with only cameras and a monopod strapped over her shoulder.
I’ve been a lover of food my entire life, and five years ago I decided to make a career of it as a freelance food stylist.
In that time, I’ve styled ten cookbooks (two were award winners!) and I’ve had my work featured in magazines including Gourmet, 5280, Sunset and Cowboys and Indians. For the majority of my styling career I’ve worked alongside food and travel photographer, Laurie Smith. I’m so excited about our new venture together on The Urban Almanac where we can express the passion we both feel for the food, farmers and foragers of the front range!
